Sasha Sr Std 4703-1 face.jpg

Sasha (4703)

Age: 10 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 24 lbs.

Sasha was abandoned in the back yard when her crack-head owner moved out. She was one of three dachshunds that were left alone without food or water. Fortunately, we were notified about them and promptly scooped them up.

When Sasha came into rescue, she was pretty shut down. The years of physical and emotional neglect had taken their toll on her. She seemed to have no interest or need for any human interaction.

Sasha Sr Std 4703-2 body.jpg

It took a while, but we now are seeing Sasha come out of her shell a little more each week. She now seems to enjoy people and is seeking their companionship far more often. She is especially fond of belly rubs and is excited when she gets to go for a walk.

Sasha is dog-selective. She is totally fine with some, not so much with others. She does like her food bowl, so she needs to be fed separately to avoid any arguments.

Sasha came to us very fat. She could hardly walk a half block. She has since lost a few pounds and has built up her stamina for walking. She is likely to always be a stout dog.

Sasha is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She had a recent dental.

If you are interested in Sasha, please fill out the online adoption application, and email Nicole at Nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Sasha is only $150.00

Grayson LH Pie Blue 4637-1 face.jpg

Grayson (4637)

Age: ~ 6 months
Color: Blue Piebald
Coat: Semi-Longhair
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 10.5 lbs.

Adoption Pending.JPG

Grayson came to us when his owner died. We are thrilled to be able to help him find a great home.

Grayson LH Pie Blue 4637-2 body.jpg

Grayson has a soft, gentle personality. He is very people focused and wants loves and cuddles. He is also very playful with other dogs. He needs a home that gets him out and about NOW. He is interested and willing to learn about the world. Daily walks, trips to get a Puppuccino, hikes along the beach – they are all on his list of wants. He also really, really wants a canine buddy to help him learn to be a brave dog.

As Grayson is a “blue” dachshund, he has some special needs and requirements. “Blue” is a recessive gene of black. Unfortunately, most blue dachshunds lose the blue fur and either have a light peach-fuzz coat in these areas or no fur at all. Either way the condition leaves their skin exposed to possible sunburn and a loss of body heat in winter. Grayson will require sunscreen on his naked areas, or at the very least, a t-shirt in summer and a sweater in winter to keep warm. He will need twice monthly bathing to prevent getting pimples on his naked skin. This is because without fur to distribute body oils, they build up on the skin (like people who get blemishes when not washing their face frequently). We also recommend a grain-free diet as many blue dachshunds also can have allergies to grains.

Because Grayson is a piebald and a longhair, he will have longhair on the areas of his body that are not blue. A professional groomer can even things out, so he doesn’t look too much like a moth-eaten sweater.

The ideal home for Grayson will have the following qualifications:

  • Someone at home most of the day, stay-at-home parents or folks who work from home.

  • Another small, confident, young-sized dog for play and companionship.

  • A very secure INDOOR place for Grayson to be when no one is at home.

  • Applicants must be between 25 and 65 years of age.

  • Previous dachshund experience is a plus but not essential.

Grayson has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. And he is crate trained. If you can provide the type of home Grayson needs, please fill out the online adoption application and email Nicole at Nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Grayson is $800.00

~ cyrus is being FOSTERED IN THE SAN JOSE AREA ~

One morning, we got a phone call about dachshunds whose owner had died. That afternoon, we had the wonderful Cyrus.

Cyrus is an amazing dog. His tail wagged non-stop the minute he got to his foster home. He was so excited to get out and do some exploring (not something he got to do in his past life). He is great with other dogs. His reaction to being “snarked” is to invite the other dog to play. One of the very jealous resident dogs is not good with new dogs. No problem. Cyrus had him playing chase and wrestling in no time.

Cyrus is also people friendly and loves to say hello everyone. He is excited about every new adventure. He’s a bit like a kid in a candy store. Now that he has the opportunity, he wants to grab all the gusto he can!

Cyrus would love a home with a playful canine companion. (Life is too short to ever be lonely.) We think he would be ok with older, respectful children.

Our little freckle belly has short fat legs so he needs a home without stairs.

Cyrus is neutered, microchipped, and is current on his vaccinations. He is crate trained.

If you are interested in Cyrus, please fill out the online adoption application and email Nicole at nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Cyrus is $700.00

Frito 4704-1 face.jpg

Frito (4704)

Age: Almost 2 years
D.O.B.: October 2017
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 13.7 lbs.

Adoption Pending.JPG

Frito is a victim of divorce. When the family split up, Frito remained with the dad. The dad works long 12-hour days, so Frito spent most of his time alone. Plus, he had to stay outside in the intense Central California heat. Realizing this was not a good life for Frito, his dad decided Frito needed to find a new and better home.

Frito is a charming dog. He has lived with, and done well with, young children (age 5 and up). He is a very friendly, outgoing, happy dog. He has also lived with other dogs and was fine with them.

Frito 4704-2 body.jpg

Frito is young, so he is energetic and playful. He needs daily exercise. On walks, he is Mr. Social, saying “hi” to everyone passing. After an outing, he enjoys cuddling with his people.

Frito is a smart little guy. He has the potential to be trained for some type of sport/obedience. Agility comes to mind.

Frito came to us a crypt-orchid (undescended testicle). We fixed that when we had him neutered. He is also current on his vaccines and microchipped.

If you are interested in Frito, please fill out the online adoption application and email Nicole at Nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Frito is $400.00

Buddy mix 4359-1 face.jpg

Little Buddy (4359)

Age: 2 years
Color: Black & Tan
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 11.5 lbs.

~ Little Buddy is being fostered in Mariposa, CA ~

As with many dachshunds that we take into rescue, we were alerted by one of our followers about Little Buddy. Little Buddy ended up as a stray in the Merced shelter at the end of May. Dina, his foster mom immediately raised her hand to go to the shelter to get Little Buddy on his release date and foster him.

Little Buddy likely didn’t have much socialization in his early development, and he is fearful of new people. That being said, he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, and his foster parents have been working diligently with him for the last few months. He trusted his foster mom much quicker than his foster dad. Bob, his foster dad started to remedy that by being the person who fed Little Buddy and gave him treats. Bob is slowly gaining Little Buddy’s trust.

Buddy Mix 4359-2 body.jpg

Little Buddy is such a sweetie, but his new people will have to understand that it is going to take time for him to trust them and his new surroundings. Little Buddy has made HUGE strides in getting over his past and on to his future, thanks to his foster parents. Little Buddy gets VERY excited when his foster mom arrives home from being away. He isn’t fond of being petted yet, but he will get there. Another huge stride for Little Buddy is that he has discovered how fun it is to play with toys. And when you read all the great qualities about Little Buddy below, you will know that he is worth the time and effort.

He is very good on a leash with his foster mom. He walks in a heel-position and when she stops, he sits. How perfect is that? However, when he is on leash with foster dad, he doesn’t walk so straight because he keeps an eye on foster dad. We would like adopters who will continue to work with him on leash training, and take him out-and-about so that he learns the world is not scary.

Little Buddy is a dachshund mix and his legs are longer, so stairs in the home should not be an issue. Little Buddy is doing well with his housetraining, and we would like people that would continue to work on his good potty habits.

Little Buddy is very good with the dachshunds in his foster home. We would like to place him in a home another confident small dog(s) for play and companionship but also to mentor him.

Little Buddy enjoys sleeping in the big bed, but he is crate trained as well. When he first arrived at his foster home, the crate was the place he felt safe, and he didn’t really want to leave it. Now he never goes in the crate. He enjoys sitting on the couch during the day. At night time he sleeps on the foot of the bed.

Little Buddy is very good in the car. He is also very good at the groomers when getting his nails trimmed. Yes, you read that right. And he is good at the vet!

Little Buddy has been neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. He has the beautiful smile of a 2 year old, no dental cleaning was necessary at this time.

If you are interested in adopting Little Buddy, please email Janice at rplsecr@yahoo.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Little Buddy is only $150.00

Spencer 4702-1 face.jpg

Spencer (4702 )

Age: 8 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 13.4 lbs.

The last couple of years were rough for Spencer and his canine buddies. When younger, they were well cared for, but then, their owner got involved in drugs. Soon the dogs were living in a crack house and were totally neglected. When their owner was evicted, she left all three dachshunds behind in the yard. Thanks to one caring person, they were rescued. One of the three dogs was so ill that he was euthanized at the vet’s recommendation. Spencer and the fat, older female have been spending their time in SCDR, getting healthy.

Spencer has a flea allergy (common in dogs). And of course, he arrived covered in fleas. As a result, he was missing the majority of his coat. Once in foster care and with no fleas, he began growing his beautiful coat back. He still has a little ways to go, but it’s clear he is soon going to be a lovely dog.

Spencer 4702-2 body profile.jpg

Spencer has been great with all the other dogs in his foster home. He really enjoys playing and romping with them. He has been great with people as well. He has put his past behind him and is happy to give folks love and kisses.

Spencer is just the right amount of active/energetic. He enjoys a walk and then cuddling up for a nap. He is devoted and will get up from a nap to follow his person around.

Spencer is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He just had a complete dental.

If you are interested in Spencer, please fill out the online adoption application and email Nicole at Nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Spencer is $225.00

Timmy 4418-1 face.jpg

Timmy (4418)

Age: ~1.5 Years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Mini – 8.5 lbs.

We decided to give Timmy, a doxie-chi mix, a Christmas miracle. He was on a local shelter’s rescue only list with a comment that he was a fear biter and had bitten an AC officer. We saw his picture for weeks, but no one saved him. So in the spirit of the holiday season, the day before he was to be put to sleep, we decided to take a chance on the little guy. In person, he is the cutest thing with the sweetest little worried look on his face.

Timmy 4418-2 body.jpg

Timmy loved his foster mom from the moment he met her. He was also terrified of her getting too close to him. He wanted to be close to her, but still maintain a safe distance. He was ignored for a few weeks and allowed to progress at his own rate. He slowly started tolerating being pet and ear scratches (he is very treat motivated). Then one day, his foster mom decided it was safe to pick him up, and he has been easy to handle since then. He adores getting human affection and attention and is always eager for lap time.

Timmy is a weird little guy. While in foster care, he has been playing the role of Drew Barrymore in 50 First Dates. If his foster mom wears different shoes, or clothing, he freaks out about the “stranger” and runs for safety out the dog door. It takes him about 5 min to accept that he knows this person after all.

Timmy loves playing with most of the doxies in his foster home. However, he is extremely jealous of the male dachshund that arrived after him. The best home for Timmy will have a confident small female sister or two to romp with and help remind him to be brave.

Timmy will need a home that will give him a few days before they try and handle him. (Or you can come visit a few times before taking him home.) For this reason, a home without children would be best.

Timmy is neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He crates nicely at bedtime although he really wants to be the first one out in the morning.

If you are interested in Timmy, please fill out the online adoption application and email Nicole at Nicolesalacain@gmail.com. An adoption application and home check are required.

The tax deductible donation for Timmy is $250.00
